So after two near-death experiences (one unintentional, the other self-induced), I'm back to the old grind in the city. But all in all I had a really great time over the holidays. It's funny because in the weeks leading up to them, bitterness and contempt usually wash over me due to the whole cash-grab of it all. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy giving presents to those I love, it's just that the whole shebang is annoying and tired.
Spent most of the break back on the Rez and in the Parry Sound area. Most of my family was back there, and so were a few friends from out of town, so it was a blast. However, my dad, brothers, and I came down with a brutal stomach flu on Christmas day, which kept us confined to beds, toilets, and buckets for the next two days. Not pleasant at all, but we shared that struggle and it became a kind of bizarre bonding experience.
But that particular Christmas curse kept me from attending my friends Matt and Ruby's Stag and Doe up in Kapuskasing, Ontario. I'm in the wedding party, so I was especially pumped to go seeing as these two live in Halifax and I only get to see them a few times a year. Alas, the sidelined digestive system wouldn't allow a seven-hour drive, so I was confined to home and had to miss this stellar bash. Sorry again guys. But I promise to make up for it at the wedding in July.
I also got to chill with my good friend Rich Larson and his girlfriend Taryn in Toronto for a few days between X-mas and NYE. It was a blast - we spent a night on the town in my neighbourhood. We went and checked out Death From Above 1979, who played at a local bar. The tunes were good, but the crowd was shitty seeing as these dudes are indie-rock all-stars now. And it kinda went to their heads too. All in all it was a good show though. But as Taryn commented, Rich and I were the most masculine dudes in the place, which was funny. I should have picked some fights and bummed all the hipsters out.
I spent NYE back in Parry Sound. My buddy Matty P. threw a really killer party, which was really well-attended and organized for being a last minute thing. I douched my insides with all kinds of booze (second near-death experience of the holidays), but it was a blast hanging out with a whole bunch of old-school friends at a really sweet house. I dressed somewhat formal for the event, but as some of you may expect the tie ended up on my head and the dress shirt on top of the fridge by the end of the night. GOOD TIMES.
So now it's back to work and into the year 2005. Halfway through this foul decade of devolving morals, war, and global self-cleansing. I'll spare any kind of self-indulgent resolution speak, but I will say the ones I have will be geared to making a more positive impact on those around me, and even myself. More morals! Less war! Anyway, I wish you all a happy, healthy, and successful 2005.
